Robots Of Brixton Winner RIBA President’s Medal

Alpha-ville 2011 Moving Image Awards winner Kibwe Tavares has won the RIBA President’s Medal for his film “Robots of Brixton”.

In the words of the artist: “Robots of Brixton is an architectural film project that explores the relationship between architecture, class and race. Using Brixton, (or an augmented Brixton) as backdrop, the project uses robots as metaphors for a future intake of migrants to the UK. It acts as a commentary on the cyclical nature of the working class in areas with diverse populations such as Brixton

The projects shows Brixton as a degenerated and disregarded area inhabited by London’s ne...

Alpha-ville 2011: LIVE in review

// LIVE Day 1 //

Opening Concert with Jacaszek, Svarte Greiner & Old Apparatus

Old Apparatus were the first act to open Alpha-ville 2011 at Rich Mix Cultural Foundation and as the first bass frequencies hummed through the dark upstairs space, there was a real sense of anticipation and excitement. Old Apparatus set matched visuals sourced from dated scientific and educational videos were scored by large slabs of abstract sound, expertly woven to create a warm, dark atmosphere. Norwegian musician Svarte Greiner followed with a similarly ambient set that combined dark images with sampled acoustic instruments...

Reporting Back From The First International Post Digital Symposium

And so concludes the first symposium on post-digital culture. And arguably the biggest question that needed answering was thoroughly debated: just what is the postdigital and how are we inhabiting this condition? The concept is simple enough, postdigital is a meditation on the idea that we are already at the stage of Alan Kay’s calm computing. The ‘digital’ permitted by computers acting as mediums and as tools has receded into the background, become invisible and as all culture transduces through it there is no longer much to be gained from delineating certain forms of expression as digital: tl;dr we are al...

Alpha-ville 2011: A debrief

Welcome to an age of post-Alpha-ville 2011! An era that encourages new methods of innovative thought, thrives on technological brainfood and offers a virtual high-five to all things digital.

But before officially waving off this years proceedings, a quick round up of my time spent at Netil House and RED Market Square and some personal highlights from what was Alpha-ville 2011.

Grey Matter

Man Bartlett’s experiential and somewhat intriguing performance ‘Grey Matter’ that took place on both Saturday and Sunday was a particular crowd-pleaser. Encouraging participation from audiences at Netil House (East Lo...

Interview with Pantha Du Prince

For anyone with even a passing familiarity with Hendrik Weber’s musical output – so often loaded with meaning and narrative – it’s perhaps unsurprising that the artist is a deep, fiercely intelligent thinker. Born in 1975 in a small German town called Bad Wildungen, his last album Black Noise was released on British independent Rough Trade. However, biographical trivia has little bearing on his art where he privileges a kind of ego dissolution of the DJ-as-creator, “Sometimes I have the impression people get lost so easily with techno music.” he tells me, during the hour we spoke together. “For me, ...

Meet Jon Hopkins

Jon Hopkins  is something of a polymath: soundtrack composer, producer, remixer, DJ. He’s the kind of guy who makes you feel like you’re shirking if you’re yet to get Brian Eno on speed dial and still waiting earn cross-discipline plaudits on a regular basis. What’s that? You haven’t? Slacker.First, some background: Raised in London, he studied classical piano at the Royal College of Music before having his ears tweaked by the surfeit of groundbreaking electronic music that was seeping out of the radio in the early 90s. Since then he hasn’t exactly looked back; his solo body of work begun with h...
