Gravity by Sergio Calderon and FIELD

Gravity by Sergio Calderon and FIELD

Pick of the Week #85

Gravity is Sergio Calderón’s chapter of Energy Flow, a collaborative app by FIELD for iOS and android. The non-linear film experience is unique every time it is played, and explores the complexity of how things are connected in our lives today.

Digital Art Studio FIELD created Energy Flow with the help of the Creators Project, bringing in artists Calderón, Maxim Meshkov, Andreas Nicolas Fischer and sound by David Kamp. The app aims to translate real-life events and processes into digital paintings in motion, exploring the “fragile equilibrium between physical, political, and cultural tensions in our world.”(FIELD)

Sergio Calderón is a Spanish Creative, Art Director, Filmmaker and Visual Artist based in London. In 2012 he co-founded, along with Céli Lee, The Unlimited Dream Company where he focuses on creating cinematic and installation artworks.

Calderón’s contribution, ‘Gravity’, features two marble-like floating structures that are drawn to one another and collide. Displaying the same darkness and atmosphere that Calderon’s work explores, ‘Gravity’ impresses the viewer with the inevitability and power of physical forces. There is also a majestic beauty in the other-worldly texture of the forms, and a coldness that could only be created with the perfection of digital.

Calderón explains, “Starting with the principle of ‘you collapse into yourself or somebody else or into some history of art…’, ‘Gravity’ explores the indeterminate space of two objects ‘out of gravity’ in collision. The lack of gravity stretches this moment in which they reveal more about themselves.” Fragmenting and splintering like fragile china, we see the marble-like forms crash over and over before float away only after having lost most of their mass and revealing a stone like texture.

“Each iteration of Energy Flow presents a different abstract narrative full of crosslinks and connotations; reflecting that there is never just one perspective on our complex world.”(FIELD)

The other contributions to the app include ‘Life’, ‘Riots’, ‘Infinity’, ‘LHC’ and ‘Skynet’.

Calderón continues, ”Working with forces, energy, tension, the element of chance… and how they can become more expressive, felt like a good approach for storytelling and I definitely think all the pieces relate to that. They work together very well as a whole.”

“‘Gravity’ is indeed a continuation, if you like, of my previous output. There is an on-going interest in exploring characters and experiences. I consider my work to be quite abstract but it tells a story. Even if non-linear, ’Gravity’ tells it’s own story. I am very interested in remains (of ideas, experiences, hopes, plans..) and moments, and in creating a certain atmosphere out of it. Building some kind of different place in which the audience can experience their own story. So it is pretty open to the imagination.”

“FIELD is a studio for digital art and design based in London, creating expressive and dynamic artworks for digital platforms. Their works explore colour, life, and infinity through new technology and a research-led approach – hi-tech audiovisual experiences with a human touch.”(FIELD)

“About a year ago, I wrote [to FIELD] because I quite like their work, then we met and they spoke about this project they were working on, ‘Energy Flow’. There were some elements on it, like the chance and the relation between energy and individuals, they used the term ‘tension’ in their briefing, I thought that was interesting. Ironically we ended up with replacing ‘tension’ with ‘non-stop intensity’.”

“I started to work on the early stages of the project and concept, doing animatics, modelling and texturing (with the help of my partner, Céli Lee), giving directions for the soundtrack, etc. As the time went by, things got really busy for me, and FIELD helped in developing it further. Soon, it became obvious that we would end up doing the piece together and I am very grateful because it wouldn’t have happened otherwise.”

Full Interview Below:

—————————————————————————–

1. How did you get involved with Field, and why did you decide to collaborate with them?
All started about a year ago. If I remember well, I wrote them because I quite like their work, then we met and they spoke about this project they were working on, Energy Flow. There were some elements on it, like the chance and the relation between energy and individuals, they used the term ‘tension’ in their briefing, I thought that was interesting. Ironically we ended up with replacing tension by non-stop intensity.
2. What was your experience with Field like?
I started to work on the early stages of the project and concept, doing animatics, modelling and texturing (with the help of my partner, Céli Lee), giving directions for the soundtrack, etc. As the time went by, things got really busy for me, and Field helped in developing it further. Soon, it became obvious that we would end up doing the piece together and I am very grateful because it wouldn’t have happened otherwise. They definitely have a different approach to work than I do which is always refreshing.
3. How would you describe ‘Gravity’ and how does it fit in with the rest of the project?
I suppose there is a few ways of describing it and that’s the interesting bit. Starting with the principle of ‘you collapse into yourself or somebody else or into some history of art…’, ‘Gravity’ explores the indeterminate space of two objects ‘out of gravity’ in collision. The lack of gravity stretch this moment in which they reveal more about themselves.
I felt the project was quite open, as I said before, there were a few concepts and ideas that did resonate with me from the beginning, like working with forces, energy, tension, the element of chance,.. and how they can become more expressive, it felt like a good approach for storytelling and I definitely think all the pieces relate to that. They work together very well as a whole.
4. How would you situate ‘Gravity’ with the rest of your work?
‘Gravity’ is indeed a continuation, if you like, of my previous output. There is an on-going interest in exploring characters and experiences. I consider my work to be quite abstract but it tells a story. Even if non linear, ’Gravity’ tells it’s own story. I am very interested in remains (of ideas, experiences, hopes, plans..) and moments, and in creating a certain atmosphere out of it. Building some kind of different place in which the audience can experience their own story. So it is pretty open to the imagination. I have been exploring this for a while, last year with ‘Gravity’ I had a good effort on that direction and I am continuing to do that in my current projects.
5. What do you think about apps as a space for artistic expression? do you think they could be the next thing for artists?
Is always stimulating to have access to new platforms and tools, in that context an app can be an exciting place to be. However, I am not very preoccupied about what the next thing is, but the ability of being flexible. No matter the platform, ideas remain in the end.
