Tele-present water

Tele-present water

PICK OF THE WEEK #21

David Bowen

This installation draws information from the intensity and movement of the water in a remote location. Wave data is being collected in real-time from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data buoy Station 46246 (49°59’7″ N 145°5’20″ W) on the Pacific Ocean. The wave intensity and frequency is scaled and transferred to the mechanical grid structure installed at The National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland. The result was a simulation of the physical effects caused by the movement of water from this distant location.

The work received one of three ex aequo awards in Alternative Now: The 14th Media Art Biennale, Wroclaw, Poland in May 2011.

Editor’s Note:
Telepresence ideas are assumed as futuristic intimacy, and a representation of social relations of the upcoming age. If a sculpture at a museum communicates with the ocean water thousands miles away, now it turns the ideas into the new dimension of an aesthetic experience. “Tele-present water” by David Bowen created a nostalgic motion of a kinetic sculpture by the data driven from the wave intensity and frequency on the Pacific Ocean. It owns one of the most unique attractiveness among his kinetic art series.
